WIESENTHAL CENTER PROTESTS ANTISEMITIC STATEMENTS BY THE PALESTINIAN
AUTHORITY REPRESENTATIVE IN ARGENTINA
The Wiesenthal Center urged the Argentine Minister of Foreign Affairs,
Carlos Ruckauf, to put an end to the repeated antisemitic statements by
Suhail Akel, the Palestinian Authority Representative in Argentina. In a
letter to Minister Ruckauf, Dr. Shimon Samuels (Director for International
Liaison of the Simon Wiesenthal Center) and Sergio Widder (Latin American
Representative), stated that "during the past few weeks, the Palestinian
Representative has used his interventions in the press to vilify the
accusation of deicide, which was the basis for persecution and slaughtering
of Jews for centuries. These statements by Mr. Akel are not new. A few
months ago, in an academic paper, he wrote: '(...) The Palestinian presence
[in Palestine] stood firmly, confronting the agressive invaders, and
overcome the rulings by Hebrew King Herod when he ordered to kill the
Palestinian new-born Jesus, and also killed hundreds of Palestinian children
(...) or what was done by the Hebrew Sanson, who arrived in Gaza and by
committing a suicide attack, he destroyed the house of the filisteos (Palestinians)
[sic], thus killing hundreds of them' (International Relations Magazine, #
22, 2002, Institute of International Relations, University of La Plata,
Argentina). "Notwighstanding Mr. Akel's freedom to re-write history
according to his own wishes, there must be no doubt that he is ignoring the
spirit of the Vatican II and Nostra Aetate declaration, which had exonerated
the Jewish people as being culpable for Jesus' death. We do not think that
an accredited diplomat may utilize his status to promote hate and hurt the
sensitivity of many Argentinians", they added. The letter urges Minister
Ruckauf to "take the appropriate measures to prevent the repetition of such
situation, which disturbs the pluralistic and democratic atmosphere in the
Argentine society". The Simon Wiesenthal Center is one of the largest
international Jewish human rights organizations with a membership of over
400,000 families in the United States. It is an NGO at international
agencies including the United Nations, UNESCO, and the Council of Europe.
